  • The scars are tiny and generally heal well.
  • It is usually done as a day surgery under sedation or general anaesthesia.
  • The different techniques include standard liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction, power assisted liposuction, waterjet assisted liposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction such as VASER.

What You Can Expect During Your Visit

Initial Consultation

Dr Khoo will meet the patient in a comfortable and private clinic environment. He will listen carefully to ascertain what the patient’s needs are. This will include what areas the patient wants improved, the amount of fat present and the tone of the overlying skin.

An examination in a relaxed setting follows to confirm the nature of each patient’s issues. Careful measurements are taken with specialized instruments and sometimes the Crisalix 3D Surgery Simulation system.

Dr Khoo will advise on the appropriate approach to each issue. For example, in the lower body, this could be a non-invasive fat reduction system such as Liposonix, Liposuction, VASER Liposelection or, when skin tone is poor, an abdominoplasty or thighplasty. The consultation will only end when the patient has a full understanding of the procedure, anticipated result and risks of the procedure.

On Day of the Surgery

Dr Khoo and his staff are experts in preparing patients for each procedure. This includes stopping certain medications and food supplements and fasting.

The procedure can be in a day surgery or inpatient setting and can last between one hour and as long as 6 hours. An overnight stay is advised for large volume liposuction.

Postoperative Period

In the postoperative period, specialized pressure garments are applied to help with shrinking of the overlying skin. Specific instructions regarding clothing, bathing, limitations in physical activity and medications to take are given. This can be as detailed as advice with loose or stretchable clothing as the pressure garments are worn underneath the clothes for 3-6 weeks after the surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Liposuction is a surgical procedure. The benefits are many but there are risks associated with the procedure. The way to minimize these risks is to choose the right plastic surgeon, the right facility and the right method for each patient. This is not to be done in the clinic by an inadequately trained doctor.

Dr Khoo generally advises patients who are clinically obese to go through a weight reduction programme before considering the procedure. Patients who have lax skin tone should consider a one or two stage procedure that involves removal of the overlying skin. For example, in the tummy area, this would be a combination liposuction and tummy tuck.

Some male patients have fat that is inside the tummy and this cannot be removed by liposuction- this can be checked at the first consultation. If liposuction is not indicated, Dr Khoo will suggest other methods.

In general we do not allow exercise for 2 weeks after the surgery. Subsequent to that, exercise is allowed but the patient have to wear a pressure garment whilst exercising.

We have received feedback from patients that the pain after a liposuction procedure is similar to the pain after intense physical exercise. It is a dull ache. There is also a feeling of tightness due to swelling and the overlying pressure garment. The pain is relieved by oral medications like Panadeine.

Surgery is not one event but a journey. The surgeon and the patient both have a role in a successful outcome. Dr Khoo and his team undertake to bring all their patients to as successful an outcome as possible.

It is important that the patient maintain a sensible diet and exercise plan to avoid re-accumulation of fat after the procedure.
